Beyond Resume Padding: Three Approaches to Service

 

I describe three main approaches to service based on my experiences during the sabbatical at Ithaca High, Boynton and DeWitt – Service Projects from Scratch, Tying Service to Academics, and, finally, Isolated Service Experiences. Throughout my description and discussions of these models, I note salient skills and values that derive from community service and service learning, such as empathy, citizenship, and combating bias. In addition, I have integrated these words into the narrative, for it is important to keep in mind the potential benefits of service, not all of them obvious or directly linked to typical classroom learning.
